India opens new front along LoC
Pakistan on May 28, 1999 accused Indian troops of opening a new front in Kashmir with cross border shelling against civilians in the Bhimber sector killing two people, a military spokesman said.

The "violation' in Bhimber which lies close to the Pakistani city of Gujrat, 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Islamabad, is a "serious development," he said. The latest firing took place some distance from where Indian troops are battling guerrilla infiltrators.(Nation).

Delhi rejects UN mily observers plea
India has turned down the request of the United Nations military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to visit Kargil and Drass sectors along the LoC to get an on spot assessment of the situation. In an exclusive interview with the The Nation, the chief of UNMOGIP, Major General Jozsef Bali said the Indian Army did not allow him to proceed flaring Kargil-Drass-Batalik sectors.(Nation).

JKLF seeks UN role in Kashmir solution
Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) has called upon the UN secretary General to take cognizance of threat to peace in South Asia and has appealed to him to take steps conducive to solving Kashmir issue peacefully, equitably. Permanently and, above all, to the satisfactions of Kashmiri people.
In a letter addressed to Mr. Kofi Annan and faxed May 29, 1999, Mr. Amanullah Khan has said that in the light of the state of affairs prevailing on South Asia, every passing day made it imperative to have Kashmir issue solved.(Nation).
